Man made opal-like stone Synthetic stone made to replicate natural Opal
Opalite is a man-made, opalescent glass that is produced in China.
It is manufactured in sheets, solely as a material for decorative products, such as carvings, decorative stones and jewellery.
Its content consists of minerals such as dolomite and metal, fused at very high temperatures to replicate the volcanic environment in which natural Opal is formed.
Opalite was first manufactured in Venice during the 16th Century as a way of replicating natural Opal. The surface of the stone features particles of Silicon Dioxide, which create the same iridescence as its natural form. It can be produced in a variety of colours, however translucent blue is currently the most popular pigment.
This stone is said to represent purity, and is believed to be particularly adept at attracting positive energy.
It is also known as ‘Opal Glass’, as it is technically not a gemstone or mineral rock.
