Excellent repeat sales – Essential oils are consumable and customers often explore new aromas over time—a useful combination of repeat purchasing and year-round appeal.
The range AW was built on – Ancient Wisdom began with Lavender Oil and an oil burner on a Sheffield market stall in 1995; the oils are now sourced worldwide and bottled in AW’s own Sheffield aromatics operation.
From Lavender to pure Rose – Familiar favourites make the first order easy, while specialist botanicals and precious absolutes give experienced customers somewhere interesting to go next.
Clear labels build confidence – Pure oils, absolutes, dilutes and blends are clearly identified, so staff can explain what is inside each bottle and why similar-looking products can be worlds apart.
Tiny bottles, excellent shelf maths – The 10ml format offers plenty of choice, room for retailer margin and very modest demands on display space.
One sale naturally leads to another – Carrier oils, diffusers, burners, gift sets and blending bottles give staff useful next-product suggestions without the hard sell.
Ready when customers know their stuff – Technical and safety documentation is available for many oils, useful when serving aromatherapists, salons, makers and well-informed customers.
The Little Bottle That Started It All
Ancient Wisdom did not begin with a grand warehouse or a complicated business plan. In 1995, it began on a Sheffield market stall with Lavender Essential Oil and a simple oil burner set. That modest little bottle turned out to have a very long shadow: essential oils became the foundation of the business and remain at the heart of its aromatherapy range.
Today, the oils are selected from established producers around the world and filled and packed through AW’s specialist aromatics operation in Sheffield. Keeping this work close to home helps maintain control over handling, presentation and consistency. Experienced customers notice when a familiar oil suddenly becomes rather unfamiliar—the nose is an unforgiving little quality-control department.
Similar Bottles, Very Different Stories
A row of 10ml bottles may look reassuringly uniform. The contents are anything but.
Essential oils are concentrated botanical extracts, commonly obtained by distillation or expression. Absolutes are aromatic extracts usually produced using methods better suited to delicate flowers, while dilutes combine genuine aromatic material with a stated carrier oil. Pure, absolute, dilute and blend are not interchangeable descriptions, which is why clear product information matters.
Yields can differ enormously between botanicals. Lavender and citrus oils may be relatively accessible, while large quantities of Rose, Jasmine or Neroli flowers are needed to obtain comparatively little aromatic extract. If a bottle described as “pure Rose” looks improbably cheap, a raised eyebrow is entirely reasonable.
AW offers clearly described dilute alternatives alongside selected pure oils and absolutes. This gives retailers useful steps through the range without disguising what is actually inside the bottle—no mystery potion and no verbal gymnastics required.
Selling by Nose, Not Alphabet
Alphabetical order is excellent for stocktaking. For a customer who only knows Lavender, however, it can resemble a very fragrant telephone directory.
Try grouping the display into citrus, fresh and minty, floral, herb and spice, and woody or resinous aromas. Place familiar names at eye level, with more unusual discoveries close by. Staff-controlled tester bottles or scent strips can turn browsing into a conversation, but customers should not be encouraged to apply undiluted oils directly to their skin.
Aromatherapy becomes much easier to understand once the customer can smell something. A photograph of a little brown bottle, charming though it may be, cannot do all the work.
Selling, Display & Marketing Ideas
Begin with recognisable favourites – Build an opening selection around Lavender, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Rosemary and familiar citrus oils, then add floral, woody and specialist choices as demand develops.
Explain the precious bottles – Display pure Rose, Jasmine and Neroli close to their clearly labelled dilute alternatives. A small card explaining extraction and botanical yield helps customers understand the difference before sticker shock takes over.
Complete the first purchase – Merchandise carrier oils, empty blending bottles, diffusers, burners and introductory gift sets close to the main display, together with clear safety guidance.
Make one oil the weekly character – Feature a scent strip with the oil’s botanical name, plant part, aroma and origin taken from its individual specification. The same information makes a useful short video or social post; a bottle photograph alone has never been much of a raconteur.
